"Dynamic wrinkles" is the term used to describe the wrinkles that are caused by the contractions of small underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh, or frown. The more expressiveness you show, the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be. You earned every one of those lines, but if you'd rather not keep them, BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment may be the answer. Wrinkle treatment for our Oregon patients has truly benefited from the introduction of BOTOX® Cosmetic.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles, such as crow's feet and folds and wrinkles across the forehead. It can be used to shape the brow or decrease the downturn at the corners of the mouth. Our Portland, Oregon-area BOTOX® patients have been very happy with the outcomes obtained with this procedure.
BOTOX® Cosmetic works by relaxing the tiny facial muscles that contract and make the expression lines and wrinkles. It does this by blocking the nerve impulses to those muscles. This blockage is accomplished with an extremely small amount of botulinum toxin. The skin over the injected, relaxed muscles becomes smoother and less wrinkled. The facial muscles that are not treated still contract in a normal manner, leaving your facial expression unaffected.
Each year, millions of people receive BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment for a variety of conditions, and it has become a popular treatment for reversing the visible signs of aging. It's certainly one of the most popular wrinkle treatment procedures in Oregon, as well as throughout the United States and indeed the world. Dr. Peter Goodkin has been using BOTOX® Cosmetic injections safely and effectively for more than 10 years.
No. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used to treat neurological disorders for more than 30 years. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health issued a consensus statement more than a decade ago about the safe use of botulinum toxin for therapeutic use. We'd be happy to explain this further for you when you're here at our Portland, Oregon-area clinic. Contact our office near Portland, Oregon for more information about BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Yes. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used for many years on thousands of patients to treat spasms of the eyelids. BOTOX® Cosmetic is also used to treat hyperhidrosis (severely sweaty palms and underarms), and some physicians are using it successfully to treat migraine headaches. Dr. Goodkin has had a number of patients who initially came to have their wrinkles treated but continue to come because their migraine headaches went away following BOTOX® treatment. At our Clackamas office, near Portland, Oregon, BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment has met with great client satisfaction.
A primary limitation of BOTOX® Cosmetic injections is that their effect doesn't last forever. Three to six months is about how long you can expect the effect to last —you will need to have injections about two or three times a year to maintain the beneficial effects. The duration of the effect varies from patient to patient and is related to the dose used.
Research has shown that the duration of the effect increases over time, and thus most people who receive BOTOX® Cosmetic injections need less frequent injections as the months and years go by.
Another limitation of BOTOX® Cosmetic is that it cannot do anything for sagging skin — injectable fillers, a facelift, or browlift may be necessary for that. However, as a wrinkle treatment for patients throughout Oregon, BOTOX® has become extremely popular due to its safety and dramatic effects.
Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. In some rare instances, BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment has resulted in an eyelid drooping or other asymmetry in the face. It is also possible for BOTOX® Cosmetic to "migrate" away from the injection site, causing temporary weakness in facial muscles nearby. The beneficial effects provided by BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment aren't permanent, and any side effects are also temporary, lasting a few weeks at most. Dr. Goodkin will discuss possible side effects with you at length before your treatment.
You can expect smoother, less wrinkled skin after BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. You can expect to look younger and more "refreshed." Keep in mind, though, that BOTOX® Cosmetic can't change wrinkles that are due to sun damage or aging, since such wrinkles aren't related to facial muscles contracting.
